About us:

Boyle Heights Beat is a youth-led community news project that serves an immigrant neighborhood of Los Angeles. It has been hailed as a model for youth development and civic engagement – by NBC, the Los Angeles Times, the Columbia Journalism Review and The New York Times. The Beat helps first generation high school students build skills that help them in school and in life. The tagline of the bilingual quarterly newspaper: “noticias por y para la comunidad” or “news by and for the community."

The Beat does double duty as a youth development program – training youth in research, interviewing, writing and critical thinking – and as an outlet that gives voice to an L.A. Latino community of close to 100,000. Its print edition is delivered to 28,000 doorsteps with 5,000 distributed in schools and churches.

Boyle Heights Beat is based at the University of Southern California.


We are seeking an experienced advancement strategic consultant, based in Los Angeles, to assist in the creation and execution of a strategic development plan. This is a contract position of up to 10 hours a week. The position will involve meetings and events across Los Angeles.

Duties will include:

  • Development and execution of a fundraising strategy that includes corporate, individual, and foundation supporters
  • Production of regular progress updates and analytical reports
  • Assist in creating a roadmap for a "give or get” board of directors
  • Identification of prospective funders, sponsors, supporters
  • Maintain donor pipeline and cultivation strategy
  • Meet development targets
